

Carson Rowland Know this sweet magnolias fans adore the relationship between Ty and Annie — and believe the “Jim and Pam” dynamic is a big reason why.
“The writers, they love that slow burn. And I think what they’re doing is turning the oven on so gradually to build people’s excitement, like they did in the car crash in season one, where there’s all this anticipation,” Rowland, 25, told exclusively. us weekly while promoting the third season of the Netflix series before the SAG-AFTRA strike. “And I love how the season ends with this subtle hint about the relationship. And it’s a huge cliffhanger of the season. I think this will make people want to come back. [for] more. Because what happens after that? They are together? they are not? We do not know.
Ty (Rowland) and Annie (Anneliese judge) have been friends for a long time, but their relationship has become increasingly complicated since Annie drunkenly confessed her feelings to Ty in Season 1. Though Ty initially didn’t feel the same way – even hanging out with Annie’s nemesis CeCe (Harland Drum) – Season 2 saw Ty’s own feelings begin to develop. In Season 3, Annie has a new boyfriend, Jackson (Sam Ashby), and Ty finds himself on the other side of a secret crush. It’s something Rowland can “relate” to in her personal life – and has enjoyed portraying on screen.
“I love how Ty has been getting a dose of his own medicine since season one,” he said. Us. “He understands a little bit of that in season two towards the end after he and CeCe broke up, but this season he’s totally into what Annie was in season one and I think it’s great for him to realize what he did with Annie in season one as well. … I see how I hurt her. This in itself will strengthen your future relationship.
Ty may be hurting in Season 3, but Annie is busy hiding a secret romance with Jackson from her parents. While Ty tries to be a good friend, helping her spend a few moments with her boyfriend, he eventually puts his foot down – and Annie realizes that their relationship isn’t worth hurting the people she loves, including Ty.
“Annie is going through something and needs a friend, but Ty is really attracted to her and I think on a subconscious level, Annie is also attracted to Ty. It’s like this electricity is brought together, almost like magnets,” he shared. “And Anneliese and I sat down and discussed a lot about that and how we wanted the dynamic to feel and that’s exactly what we’re going for.”
The drama culminates in an explosive split during the season finale, which finds Annie running into Ty’s arms for comfort. It’s a moment that will inevitably be cherished by “TyAnnie” fans – and Rowland credits Judge and the writers for bringing it to life so viscerally.
“That breakup scene was so well written and [Anneliese’s] the performance on the day was just amazing,” he enthused, adding that he didn’t even “feel the need to act” because of the “great friendship” the duo built over the years. “Working with her is truly just a blessing and so grateful for her.”
Although – spoiler alert – Ty and Annie don’t officially get together as a couple until the end of Season 3, the two do share a private domain that suggest something else to come over. rowland said Us that the intimate scene it was actually “discovered in the day” while they were filming and not written “in the script”.

“We rehearsed the scene and were only supposed to touch hands briefly. I made one of those Mr. darcy Pride and Prejudice things where he reaches out his hand and [our showrunner] sheryl [Anderson] it was like, ‘Wait, take her hand and put her behind you.’ And it was just amazing,” he revealed, noting that it was a “very special” day on set.
What’s to come for the characters and town of Serenity is unknown – the show has yet to be renewed for Season 4 – but Rowland is excited for Ty’s future. He’s also open to the series staying true to the narratives of Sherryl Woods’ books of the same name, which follows Ty and Annie’s relationship into adulthood.
“I would absolutely love to do a time jump like that,” he said. Us. “There are so many amazing aspects to playing a blossoming adult and a teenager. But playing something more grounded and more real would be just amazing. Mainly knowing that [it would] it being the first time I’ve played my age, so it would be awesome, you know?”
