New Zealand, co-hosts of the Women’s World Cup, were stunned by tournament debutants Philippines, who claimed their first win of the tournament with a 1-0 victory in Wellington.
Sarina Bolden’s historic goal midway through the first half was enough to secure a seismic upset, with Jacqui Hand’s equalizer ruled out for offside as New Zealand failed to secure their opening win over Norway.
The result leaves Group A wide open, with Norway looking to bounce back from their early defeat to Switzerland in a European clash.
Earlier on Tuesday, Catalina Usme and 18-year-old star Linda Caicedo scored to give Colombia a 2-0 victory over South Korea in their opening game.
On Monday, Brazil kicked off with a comfortable 4-0 victory over Panama courtesy of an Ary Borges hat-trick, while Italy beat Argentina 1-0 in the opening game of the day, with veteran striker Cristiana Girelli coming off the bench to secure the winning goal. Germany thrashed Morocco 6-0.

Catalina Usme and Linda Caicedo scored to give Colombia a 2-0 victory over South Korea in their opening game of the Women’s World Cup on Tuesday.
Usme scored from the penalty spot in the 30th minute after a South Korean handball, sending goalkeeper Yoon Younggeul the wrong way before slotting the ball into the far corner.
Caicedo, an 18-year-old Real Madrid striker, doubled Colombia’s lead nine minutes later, volleying in a high shot that Yoon managed but lacked the strength to send it over the bar. The ball squirted into the net, much to the delight of Colombian fans dressed in yellow at the Sydney Football Stadium.
“Well, I’m extremely happy, but that has to do with everyone’s collective work,” said Caicedo of his first World Cup goal.
“The feeling that the group had entering the field we were a little anxious, we wanted the World Cup to start, and we wanted to start off on the right foot, that was something fundamental.
“Very happy for the goal and for the victory.”
American teenager Casey Phair became the youngest player to take the field in Women’s World Cup history, coming on as a 78th-minute substitute, just 26 days after her 16th birthday.
