Ranked play for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 kicks off on February 15th, and ahead of that, Activision released key details about the system. The new mode comes with the Season 2 update, which brings back the 1v1 Gulag and a new map for its battle royale half of Warzone 2.0. Building on the foundation laid in Call of Duty: Vanguard, developer Treyarch is teaming up with Infinity Ward to build a Ranked Play system that follows the rules set by the Call of Duty League (CDL). For the uninitiated, that means competitive 4v4 multiplayer matches restricted to specific game modes.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Ranked Play: skill divisions and rankings
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 will feature eight new skill divisions – Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Diamond, Crimson, Iridescent and Top 250. Your placement will be calculated based on skill ratings (SR), with everyone being forced to start from the lowest tier. No matter how well you performed in Call of Duty: Vanguard, you’ll be forced to prove yourself once again, shredding through the ranks and rising to the division you belong in. Each division is subdivided into three levels. Starting with Bronze I, players will have to move up to Bronze II, Bronze III and then move up to the Silver division and repeat the process. While winning or losing will certainly affect how much SR you earn, Activision claims it will count your contribution during matches to provide a fair output. The only point where this format changes is in the Top 250 layer.
Similar to Overwatch, the Top 250 division is home to the best players from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2’s ranked mode. At this time, Activision has not confirmed whether the leaderboards will be separated based on region. If you’re a CDL Pro, your name will be displayed alongside a player profile that mentions your team affiliation and manager – making you easily recognizable.
Of course, it’s also possible to team up with your friends for unhindered ranked play as long as you follow a few rules. Players from Bronze to Platinum levels can enjoy it without limitations. Meanwhile, “Diamond and Crimson players can only form groups and play against other players within two skill divisions,” the blog post notes. Iridescent and Top 250 players can only queue in/against a skill split.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Ranked Game: Rankings
Ranks are an additional form of leveling system, which serves as bragging rights in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. They range from level 1 to level 50, denoted by different emblems – starting with a snake and ending with a dragon icon. Advancing in the rankings is as simple as winning a competitive match, which grants each one a star, which serves to level up. Since they’re win-only based, anyone with a decent amount of playtime can reach the max level of 50 – no matter where their Skill Division is. Each time you surpass five ranks, the game will award a new set of rewards, ranging from skins, weapon blueprints, calling cards, and other cosmetics.
Additionally, as an end-of-season reward, Call of Duty will be giving out custom skins based on the highest Skill Division players achieved. They are only available to players who have reached Gold and higher, while Bronze and Silver rankers receive a new emblem.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Ranked Play begins February 15 on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series S/X.
