BookMyShow Stream has partnered with Mubi, a subscription-based movie streaming service and distributor, to expand its catalog with award-winning films aimed at moviegoers. The collaboration promises to bring over 40 acclaimed titles to the platform, starting with Park Chan-wook’s Decision to Quit, Charlotte Wells’s Aftersun and Léa Mysius’s The Five Devils. The first two are now available for rent or purchase on BMS Stream, while the latter is marked for pre-rent and pre-purchase, with prices set at Rs. 69 and Rs. 199 respectively. All rented movies will be accessible for 30 days, but once you start streaming, you’ll have two days to finish watching. There are no limitations on the movies you buy; you can watch as many times as you want.
“Our partnership with Mubi is another step in the direction of developing this slate of impactful content, constantly bringing the best of the world to India and meeting this massive demand,” said Ashish Saksena, COO, Cinemas, BookMyShow in a press release. “This partnership opens up the Mubi catalog to the discerning ‘Pay-Per-View’ audience and is a testament to consumers’ unwavering interest and preference for the potential of the TVOD format in India, and together we are poised to revolutionize the content consumption experience.” While not explicitly mentioned, the normal Mubi platform/app will continue to function as normal, while this partnership is simply a way to introduce these films to a new audience.
A Mubi subscription in India costs Rs. 299 per month, promising ad-free streaming along with an extra seven-day free trial. There is also Mubi Go – Rs. 499 Monthly – which grants you a movie ticket every week to redeem at a local theater. Memberships can also be purchased annually for Rs. 1999, although this new partnership with BookMyShow Stream allows you to watch select titles without having to pay for the full subscription. It may add up over time, but that varies based on how much content you consume, of course. New films will be added every Friday, with the content list featuring a range of international films in multiple languages including English, French, German, Korean, Catalan, Danish, Arabic, Norwegian, Polish and more.
As mentioned earlier, one of the top debut entries is Park Chan-wook’s latest film, Decision to Quit, which begins as a normal detective story based on a man who plummets to his death from the top of a mountain. As Hae-joon (Park Hae-il) begins his investigation, he feels a strong attraction to the deceased’s disturbingly suspicious wife, Seo-rae (Tang Wei), turning the film into a twisted romance thriller of deception and desire, where the pair convey their feelings for each other in the most absurd ways. The filmmaker won the Best Director award at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival, while the film strangely was not selected to compete for the Oscar for Best International Feature. The decision to leave is now available for rent and purchase on BMS Stream.
Aftersun largely follows 11-year-old Sophie (Frankie Corio) as she spends time with her father Calum (Paul Mescal) at a holiday resort in the late 1990s, forming a powerful bond. Twenty years later, an adult version of Sophie relives these memories through a camera, trying to piece together what caused the painful end of their relationship. Mescal received an Academy Award nomination for her performance in the film, with first-time filmmaker Charlotte Wells earning multiple accolades for her breakthrough. Aftersun is now available for rent and purchase on BMS Stream.
Vicky Soler (Sally Dramé) has the magical gift of being able to smell and reproduce any scent and store them in labeled bottles, including those of her own mother Joanne (Adèle Exarchopoulos). When estranged Aunt Julia (Swala Emati) suddenly returns to town – after a prison sentence – Vicky replicates her scent too, transporting her into dark memories that lead to some telling secrets from the aunt’s village and her family. The Five Demons is directed by Léa Mysius (ava) and is currently available for pre-rent and pre-order on BMS Stream.
Over the coming weeks, the BookMyShow Stream will be adding other acclaimed Mubi movies and TV series, including Lars von Trier’s Kingdom, Belgian drama Close, Paul Verhoeven’s Benedetta, Céline Sciamma’s Petite Maman, Julia Ducouranau’s Titane, David Cronenberg’s Future Crimes, Rachel Sennott’s Shiva Baby and The Worst Person in the World, plus many more in the coming weeks.
There is currently no timeline for which movie will be released next Friday on BMS Stream. It’s also worth mentioning that Mubi is also available as a paid companion channel on Amazon Prime Video.
